The study was based on data from long-term stationary field experiments processed using theoretical, empirical, and experimental (field, laboratory, and statistical) methods. The adaptability of major field crops to current climate change was established; the effectiveness of organic, mineral, and organo-mineral fertilization systems under different soil tillage technologies was determined; and the patterns of fertility transformation of ordinary chernozem were identified. It was demonstrated that organic and organo-mineral fertilization systems ensure stabilization of soil physicochemical properties, an increase in humus content, optimization of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium regimes, and the formation of a balanced or positive humus balance. A model for the sustainable functioning of agrocenoses in the Steppe zone was theoretically substantiated, providing for a rational combination of crop rotations, the use of crop residues, and environmentally safe fertilization systems. Implementation of the model ensures a zero or positive humus balance, mitigation of soil degradation processes, and increased crop rotation productivity. In grain–row crop rotations, the humus balance deficit is compensated through the incorporation of non-marketable residues of stubble crops and sunflower, whereas in grain–grass rotations a positive humus balance is formed (+0,24–0,25 t/ha). Arable land productivity reaches 4,03–4,50 t of grain units per hectare, with yield increases ranging from 0,50 to 1,49 t/ha depending on the fertilization system. The content of toxic elements in soil and crop products complies with regulatory standards. The economic effect is characterized by profits of 6,830–20,610 UAH and a profitability level of 26–59%.
