The peculiarities of the formation of the methodology of strategic management of the development of rural areas have been revealed, the organizational and economic mechanism of state regulation affecting the strategic management of development has been determined, and the strategic method of managing the development of rural areas has been substantiated. The definition of the concept of strategic management of territories has been clarified and a comprehensive study of the essence and strategy of the formation of sustainable development of rural territories as an economic category has been carried out. Methodical approaches to defining rural areas as a sphere of life are systematized. The theoretical and methodical aspects of the functioning of the mechanism of sustainable development of rural areas have been studied. The economic essence was clarified and methodical approaches to the development of a strategy for the socio-economic development of rural areas were determined. The priority directions and tools of sustainable socio-economic development of rural areas are substantiated. Methodical approaches to assessing the effectiveness of rural development are systematized. It is substantiated that the assessment of the level of sustainability of the development of rural areas should be carried out on the basis of the construction of integral, generalizing, aggregated indicators.
