Hospitalization of a newborn in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), separation from the mother, and numerous invasive interventions cause and increase stress in both infants and their parents. Newborns hospitalized in NICUs are exposed to multifactorial stress: severe general condition of the baby and disorders caused by diseases, prematurity, lack of a full early adaptation period, separation from the mother, painful manipulations, light and sound stimuli. Mothers of sick infants also face many stress factors in NICUs, such as anxiety about the baby's condition, inability to fully care for and be with their child around the clock, breastfeeding disorders, etc. Therefore, it is important to assess the level of stress in mothers and infants in NICUs, to identify the factors that have the most significant stress impact in order to develop measures to eliminate them.
