INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW, ARMED CONFLICT, PRINCIPLES OF INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW, GENEVA CONVENTIONS, HAGUE CONVENTIONS, NATIONAL GUARD OF UKRAINE The aim of the study was to comprehensively examine the normative content, theoretical and methodological approaches, and practical aspects of the application of the principles and norms of international humanitarian law by units of the National Guard of Ukraine while performing tasks under martial law, as well as to develop scientifically sound recommendations for improving the application of IHL norms. The study analysed international and national regulatory and legal acts. A set of methods was used: legal, historical and sociological analysis, as well as empirical audit. It was established that the main internal document regulating the implementation of IHL norms in the NGU (Armed Forces of Ukraine) remains the 2017 Instruction, which, despite a certain degree of compliance with international regulatory and legal acts, does not fully take into account modern challenges (cyber operations, UAVs, hybrid threats) and requires significant updating. A number of systemic problems have been identified: insufficient integration of IHL norms into tactical planning, superficial knowledge of military personnel, outdated forms of training and monitoring, and a lack of digital tools to monitor compliance with IHL. Based on a comparative analysis of NATO standards and NGU practices, key discrepancies have been identified and recommendations formulated: updating Instruction No. 164, introducing digital monitoring platforms, interactive training programmes and integrating IHL into planning processes at all levels. The forms of practical application of IHL norms by NGU units (planning and prevention, operational and tactical, protective, identification, control and supervision, etc.) have been summarised.
