The influence of climatic conditions on their spread was studied, as well as the formation of a natural entomopathogenic complex that regulates pest populations within agroecosystems. The obtained results made it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of pre-sowing seed treatment of maize against major diseases and pests, and to determine the efficiency of insecticide applications against lepidopteran pests. In addition, the resistance level of new winter wheat varieties and maize hybrids to pests and diseases was established. Based on these data, a scientifically grounded system of integrated protection of winter wheat and maize against diseases and pests was developed for the Steppe zone of Ukraine. This system takes into account the current species composition of harmful organisms characteristic of the northern Steppe and proposes a comprehensive approach to their control. It includes the use of resistant varieties and hybrids, enhancement of the phytosanitary role of agrotechnical practices, and environmentally safe application of seed treatments, insecticides, and fungicides with improved agroecological characteristics. Implementation of this system allows for the preservation of 0.3–0.5 tons of grain per hectare, improvement of grain quality, reduction of pesticide load on the environment, and saving of production resources by up to 20 %. The economic effect of introducing the scientifically based integrated protection system is estimated at 1,200–1,700 UAH per hectare, ensuring reduced pesticide use, prevention of yield losses, and enhancement of grain quality.
