According to X-ray phase and metallographic analysis, it was established that after combined nitriding, a hardening ormed on the surface, which consists of TiN mononitride and a subsurface martensite layer induced by deformation of α”-Ti(N) and a diffusion zone. In addition, areas of α-Ti(Al,N) and Ti3Al(N) grains were recorded under the strengthening layer. The thickness of the nitride zone (TiN + α”-Ti(N)) reaches 0.5 μm and 1.5 μm for combined nitriding, which was carried out at nitrogen pressures of 1 Pa and 105 Pa, respectively. It was also found that the depth of the diffusion zone, which was characterized by higher microhardness compared to the matrix, was ~30 μm and ~45 μm, which was probably caused by the diffusion of nitrogen into the primary α-Ti grains. Tribological studies have shown that combined nitriding in a static nitrogen atmosphere (105 Pa) allows for 1-2 orders of magnitude improvement in the wear resistance of titanium alloys under sliding friction conditions.
