As well as the search for common features, interpretation and establishment of potential influences on the formation of Galician architecture. popup.description2 Researching the construction and function of 11th–13th century European churches reveals a period of profound synthesis in building traditions. Architectural forms became the visual manifestation of complex geopolitical and spiritual shifts, merging Eastern spiritual canons with Western European structural logic to achieve unprecedented architectural complexity. The historical-architectural analysis substantiates that Eastern and Central European territories witnessed a singular fusion of the Byzantine cross-in-square model with Romanesque architectural vocabulary (including splayed portals, arched corbel tables, and twin-tower westworks). Such integration demonstrates the adaptability of medieval architects who harmonized the Kyivan 'spatial hierarchy' with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Latin West. Technical analysis indicates a shift from Byzantine opus mixtum toward Western European ashlar masonry. By incorporating Romanesque vaulting and foundation techniques, medieval builders enhanced spatial complexity while maintaining the quintessential centricity of the Kyivan architectural tradition. During this era, the church served as both a liturgical sanctuary and a vehicle for state representation. By merging Byzantine interior iconography with Romanesque architectural sculpture, a new 'visual theology' emerged, addressing the spiritual and ideological needs of both the ruling elite and the common laity. Consequently, ecclesiastical architecture of the 11th–13th centuries emerged not as an isolated development but as a dynamic, evolving system. The synergy of Byzantine-Kyivan morphology and Romanesque engineering fostered a singular architectural landscape in which Western rationalism and Eastern spiritual metaphysics achieved organic synthesis. This substantiates the concept of a cohesive medieval European cultural sphere, with architecture acting as the principal conduit for intercultural exchange.
