Given current trends, the need to develop new compact and integrated combined structures that would combine the processes of mixing, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration in a single body has been substantiated. The designs proposed by the authors take into account the interdependence of technological elements and allow for the intensification of purification processes without a significant increase in area, increasing the stability of the structures under changing conditions. A mathematical model of the process of removing organic pollutants in aerotanks-displacers has been developed, which includes equations for the transfer of organic pollutants and oxygen both in the free volume of the aerotank and in the biofilm. The model also covers the mechanisms of oxygen consumption and the processes of oxidation of organic pollutants, taking into account the simultaneous removal of pollutants using both suspended biocenosis (activated sludge) and fixed biocenosis (biofilm). For different variants of technological schemes of arrangement of reactors with attached biomass, corresponding calculated dependencies were obtained. The conducted studies using mathematical modeling showed that the efficiency of the filtering structure with a variable filtration rate is higher than with a constant rate, however, with an increase in the turbidity of the source water, there is a significant probability of deterioration in the quality of the filtered water at the beginning of the filter cycle. The use of granular backfill with a larger grain size and a corresponding increase in the thickness of its layer is effective both for a structure operating in a constant filtration rate mode and with a variable rate.
