The aim is to enhance efficiency and optimize measures to minimize technogenic impacts on the environment and population during decommissioning of nuclear and radiation-hazardous facilities within a large city, particularly the WWR-M reactor, and to improve countermeasures against illicit trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials. Methods include experimental monitoring using high-sensitivity γ-, β-, and α-spectrometry, ICP-MS, radiochemical and instrumental techniques for determining nuclear and other radioactive materials in waste generated during decommissioning and in surrounding environments. Achievements include the development of the “Regulations on Radiation Monitoring of Environmental Objects within the Sanitary Protection and Observation Zones of the WWR-M Research Reactor of the INR of the NAS of Ukraine” and justification of allowable releases for nuclear-physics installations as per the “Permissible Gas-Aerosol Release of Nuclear-Physics Installations of the INR of the NAS of Ukraine (Radiation-Hygienic Regulation, First Group).” Research has been conducted on nuclear, radiation, and environmental safety during WWR-M decommissioning, and planning has begun in accordance with Ukrainian legislation. Nuclear forensic examinations of seized nuclear and other radioactive materials are performed following CMU Res. No. 813 (02.06.2003) and law enforcement rulings on judicial expertise.
