Objects of research include natural and urban ecosystems; the atmospheric, geological, and hydrological environments; personnel and the population within the impact zone of the WWR-M research nuclear reactor (RNR) of the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine; and locations where nuclear and other radioactive materials have been detected outside regulatory control. Objective of the work – to enhance and optimize measures to minimize adverse technogenic impacts on the environment and the public during the decommissioning of nuclear and radiation-hazardous facilities in an urban area (in particular, the WWR-M RNR), and to improve countermeasures against illicit trafficking of nuclear and other radioactive materials. Research methods – experimental monitoring using modern highly sensitive methods of γ-, β-, α-spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometry, radiochemical and instrumental methods for determining the content of nuclear and other radioactive materials in radioactive waste that will be generated during the decommissioning of the WWR-M RNR and in environmental objects. Studies were carried out on aspects of nuclear, radiation, and environmental safety during the decommissioning of the WWR-M RNR. An analysis was performed of potential accident scenarios that may arise during the execution of technological processes used in the course of decommissioning. Possible radiation dose exposures to personnel and the public were assessed. To ensure radiation-safe conditions during the removal of the Pu-Be fast neutron source of the IBN-108 type from the storage facility for transfer to the State Specialized Enterprise "Association "Radon"" for long-term storage, its activity and neutron flux were calculated.
