On the basis of the new lines, two hybrids resistant to herbicides and suitable for the production of ethanol alcohol popup.description2 During the reporting period, the Plant Breeding and Genetics Institute – NCSCI conducted research on sugar, broom, and Sudanese sorghum for bioenergy purposes. New high-yielding hybrids and self-pollinating lines were developed, characterized by drought tolerance, heat resistance, lodging resistance, disease resilience, and high soluble sugar content in stem juice. Varieties and lines of different sorghum species were evaluated, valuable trait donors were identified, and seeds of parental components were prepared for state seed production. New sterile sugar sorghum hybrids – Mul and Sapsan – as well as self-pollinating parental lines, were submitted for state qualification and included in the State Register of Plant Varies. The results demonstrate the high potential of the developed hybrids for bioethanol, syrup, and solid fuel production, as well as for fodder purposes. Methodological recommendations were proposed for improving combinatorial breeding and agronomic practices of sorghum cultivation for bioenergy. The studies confirmed the efficiency of interspecific hybrids and their economic viability, contributing to the development of renewable energy and strengthening food and energy security in Ukraine.
