The object of the study is urban settlements that have formed a spatial urban network throughout history. The aim of the work is to identify the stages of its formation and study its condition. The result of the study: for the first time in the last 125 years (based on data from all population censuses, starting with the first All-Russian census of 1897, and analysis of the main influencing factors), a study of the peculiarities of the formation of the urban network of Ukraine has been carried out and trends in changes in the settlement of the urban population have been identified, which is the basis for future work on the restoration of Ukraine and its post-war development. In the course of the research, measures are being taken to implement its results. First of all, a thematic atlas entitled ‘Urban Network of Ukraine: Formation and Development,’ a monograph entitled ‘Formation and Development of the Settlement Network of Ukraine (Cartographic Analysis),’ and several important articles have been published.
