A close relationship was established between the degree of autumn development of mother roots, their physiological status prior to winter dormancy, and plant viability during the spring–summer period. The study demonstrated that early sowing (the third ten-day period of August) ensured the formation of well-developed mother roots with optimal morphological characteristics (root weight 7–30 g, crown diameter 0.5–2.5 cm, 10–12 fully developed leaves), as well as an increased content of dry matter and sugars, which promoted effective hardening and enhanced resistance to low winter temperatures. In seasons characterized by less favorable overwintering conditions, plant survival under the early sowing date was higher than under later sowing (the first ten-day period of September). In years with milder autumn–winter conditions, overall plant survival was higher regardless of the treatment; however, the advantage of early sowing remained consistent across years. Field emergence and final stand density were strongly influenced by seeding rate and autumn weather conditions. Under optimal plant density, natural self-thinning occurred, resulting in 20–25 plants per meter of row before winter and 12–14 plants after overwintering, which met the biological requirements of sugar beet under the direct-seeding method. Excessive plant density, particularly when combined with later sowing dates, led to the formation of weakly developed plants with reduced reserves of assimilates in the roots, thereby decreasing winter hardiness and overall survival.
