In the course of work on the additional departmental research topic “Ancient Vocabulary of the Ukrainian Language in the Context of Social Change” (March–December 2025), the theoretical and methodological foundations for studying the processes of passivization of ancient vocabulary in the Ukrainian literary language were outlined from sociolinguistic and historical-linguistic perspectives; sociocultural factors influencing the formation of negative evaluations of lexemes formally similar to Russian ones in contemporary discourse were described; the role of Ukrainian synonymy in the processes of displacement of native words and in the formation of competition between synonymous units with different degrees of formal distance from the Russian language was analyzed; and the dynamics of the functional potential of native (indigenous) lexemes in diachrony were examined.
