Objects of research include natural and urban ecosystems; atmospheric, geological, and hydrological environments; personnel and the population within the impact zone of the WWR-M RNR; and locations where nuclear and other radioactive materials have been detected outside regulatory control. Purpose of the work is to increase the efficiency and optimize measures aimed at minimizing negative technogenic impacts on the environment and the public during activities related to the decommissioning of nuclear and radiation-hazardous facilities located within a large city, in particular the WWR-M RNR, as well as to enhance the effectiveness of counteracting illicit trafficking in nuclear and other radioactive materials. Research methods include experimental monitoring using highly sensitive γ-, β-, and α-spectrom., mass spectrom., and methods for determining radioactive material content in environmental objects. The reactor facility design incorporates technical and organizational measures to ensure nuclear and radiation safety under normal operation and potential emergency conditions. Design-basis and beyond-design-basis accident scenarios were analyzed. A Decommissioning Strategy has been developed as the key document substantiating organizational, technical, and safety issues, as well as the timelines for decommissioning of the WWR-M RNR of the Institute for Nuclear Research of NAS of Ukraine. In accordance with Resolution No. 813 of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine dated 2 June 2003, and on the basis of decisions issued by law-enforcement authorities on the appointment of forensic examinations, nuclear-forensic expert studies were carried out on radioactive materials seized from illicit trafficking, with the purpose of preparing them for disposal or long-term storage.
