Sokolovsky» popup.description1 The aim is to develop methodological bases for the use of multispectral space scanning data to determine and regionalize the heterogeneity of soil cover to create a modern system of information support for the rational use and objective assessment of soil resources of Ukraine. popup.description2 Research methods – information and bibliographic analysis; abstract–logical methods; mathematical and statistical methods; and methods of computer-based processing of spaceborne remote sensing data using geographic information systems. The use of high spatial resolution spaceborne scanning data for the identification and parameterization of soil heterogeneity within local soil cover structures on agricultural lands has been substantiated. Methodological foundations and systems of formal and empirical criteria for the diagnosis and regionalization of soil cover heterogeneity have been defined. The foundations of a practical methodology for soil interpretation of spaceborne imagery have been developed. This methodology includes theoretical bases, principles, and specific features of combining methods of digital processing of satellite images, multidimensional data analysis, multilevel geostatistical analysis of spaceborne scanning data and selective soil sampling, as well as methods of soil quality assessment, mapping, and spatial analysis implemented within a GIS-based approach. Based on the processing of experimental research data, it has been demonstrated that the developed approaches and the integrated set of methods for soil interpretation of high spatial resolution spaceborne scanning data made it possible to identify elements of local soil cover structures that differ in the characteristics of soil vertical profile structure. This not only substantiates the feasibility of using such data for large-scale soil cover mapping of the country’s agricultural lands, but also confirms the existence of a direct or indirect relationship between the optical characteristics (or optical signatures) of the soil surface and its morphological structure.
