Theoretical principles and practical recommendations for the use of population monitoring for the purpose of preserving rare plant species, certain animal species and their habitats in the highlands of the Ukrainian Carpathians will be substantiated and developed. On the basis of these studies, general schemes of monitoring programs will be developed for plant species of different life forms and types of biomorphs, with excellent ecological and biological properties, life cycles and methods of reproduction and different vulnerability to threat factors. Schemes of monitoring programs will also be developed for individual species of animals - planktonic crustaceans and amphibians. popup.description2 Research report: 55 p., 12 fig., 2 tables. Populations of rare plant and animal species in the highlands of the Ukrainian Carpathians undergo transformations primarily under the influence of climatic and demutational changes. These factors lead to the regression of populations of rare, poorly competitive, cold-resistant species due to the expansion of more competitive, thermophilic species. An important parameter for monitoring populations of heterosexual plant species is the abundance of flowering. The main threat to populations and phytocenoses of rare highland species remains the intensive harvesting of the Icelandic cetraria, particularly in protected areas. To avoid further digression of the alpine ecosystems of the Carpathians, it is necessary to include the Icelandic cetraria in the Red Book of Ukraine. The most likely unique population of the arctic-alpine species Salix hastata L. in Ukraine was discovered in Chornohora, which proves its occurrence in the Ukrainian Carpathians. It is planned to substantiate the feasibility of including the mentioned species in the “Red Book of Ukraine”. For the first time, juvenile Danube salmon (Hucho hucho), a species listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, was discovered in the upper reaches of the Prut River. Measures that need to be applied to preserve the high-mountain ecosystems of the Ukrainian Carpathians were identified: • the need to implement measures for active biodiversity conservation, in particular, in the territories of the NRF, primarily moderate grazing; • inclusion of the Icelandic cetraria (Cetraria islandica L.) in the Red Book of Ukraine; • the need to improve the law on environmental protection; • the need to prohibit capital construction in high-mountain areas - above the upper climatic forest boundary. In different regions of the Carpathians – these are territories above 1200 m in the northern part of the Ukrainian Carpathians and above 1500 m above sea level – in the southern part.
