Mechnikov National University popup.description1 Generalization, systematization, and analysis of the results of long-term (2000-2023) original research on the concentrations of gross and mobile forms of a number of metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Fe, Zn, Mn, Al, V) in aquatic (water-suspended particles-bottom sediments-macroalgae) and terrestrial (soils-vascular plants) ecosystems of the Kuyalnik Estuary. Assessment of possible pathways of heavy metal migration through terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. popup.description2 The aim of the research was to summarize, systematize, and analyze the results of many years (2000-2018) of original research on the concentrations of gross and mobile forms of a number of metals (Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Fe, Zn, Mn, Al, V) in aquatic (water-suspended particles-bottom sediments-macroalgae) and terrestrial (soils-vascular plants) ecosystems of the Kuyalnik Estuary (KE). The peculiarities of migration and accumulation in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem chains have been researched. According to the calculations of bioaccumulation coefficients, it has been established that the transfer of heavy metals to the green and charophyte algae, and the class of yellow-green algae, as well as higher aquatic plants (Potamogeton pectinatus, Ceratophyllum demersum, Eleocharis palustris) and invertebrate organisms (gill-footed crustaceans Artemia salina, chironomids Chironomus salinarius) common in the KE and its tributaries occurs mainly from the water. Bottom sediments in KE show contamination, with concentrations of gross forms of (Zn, V, Pb, Cd ) exceeding background lithosphere levels. Additionally, mobile forms of the most toxic metals (Cd, Pb, Zn) exceed Maximum Permissible Concentrations for soils. In the soils of the coastal zone of the KE, there is an excess of clark values for Cd by 22 times and for Zn by 2.4 times. The ratio of the specified series of metals in soluble and suspended forms in water KE is highlighted, as well as the ratio of gross, mobile, exchangeable, organic, carbonate, and residual forms of metals in bottom sediments and soils. Species of algae, higher aquatic plants, which can be used as informative indicators of contamination of water bodies with particular metals, are singled out. The obtained results can be used to analyze the ecological situation in the KE watershed basin, make management decisions regarding the recreation of its ecosystems.
