For the first time, a new method for growing gradient-doped crystals using the HDC method with a double crucible as a source for feeding the melt has been proposed and implemented. This allows for more flexible and wider control of the concentration gradient and parameters of the dopant distribution profile. The optical and spectral characteristics, crystal and defect structure, dopant distribution parameters depending on the growth conditions were studied, In particular, it was found that the two-color color of YAG crystals with the formation of broad absorption bands (380-500 nm, 550-750 nm) is determined by intrinsic centers that arise as a result of non-stoichiometric evaporation of the melt, and include antistructural defects (YAl), cationic and anionic vacancies, as well as complexes associated with them: F+–VAl, F+–YAl, O––YAl. The laser tests of the obtained crystals were conducted, which proved the prospects of the developed technologies and the possibility of practical application of crystals for obtaining optical elements-suppressors (YAG:Sm) of active elements (gradient-doped YAG:Nd, YAG:Yb) with increased generation and improved thermo-optical characteristics, including new type of combined YAG:Nd/YAG:Sm elements with a gradient distribution of active neodymium ions for creating powerful and efficient diode-pumped solid-state lasers.
