To develop selection techniques for increasing the productivity of Ascanian Fine-Fleeced sheep during purebred breeding and crossing popup.description2 An analysis of European and Ukrainian regulatory acts regarding animal welfare was conducted, and the key aspects forming the system for assessing sheep welfare according to international standards were identified. A sheep welfare assessment scheme was developed, based on the principles of the Five Freedoms and the concept of animal health quality, integrating physiological, behavioral, environmental, veterinary-hygienic, and social indicators. Based on this assessment scheme, a protocol for evaluating sheep welfare was created, allowing standardized recording of data for each indicator. Based on the conducted evaluation using the defined indicators, it was determined that the level of sheep welfare in the farm is 78% (average score 3.8), which generally corresponds to the requirements of Directive 98/58/EC and the Welfare Quality principles. Methodological recommendations were developed to improve breeding work, preserve genetic diversity, and enhance the productivity and adaptability of Askanian sheep.
