It has been established that the presence of grooves in the flexible bottom and grooves on the support ring of the designs of face packing seals with formed hydrodynamic structures leads to deformation of the stuffing box packing in these places and the formation of a wedge-shaped gap, which ensures the injection of the working medium. This leads to an increase in hydrodynamic pressure and the pushing of the stuffing box packing from the surface of the support ring, allowing reducing the maximum contact pressure, friction moment and wear of the support ring surface. A method for calculating the wear of the surface of the stuffing box shaft sleeve has been developed based on the Archard wear model.
