The prototype's scalability is foreseen for the principle engine performances. Particular attention will be paid to the design, materials, and manufacturing technology, including the catalysts. This deals with the high-temperature stresses, ammonia chemical activity and sealing aspects. popup.description2 The results of developing a catalytic recuperator for the ammonia-water fuel system of a hydrogen internal combustion engine (ICE) are presented. The project aims to address the global challenge of transport decarbonization by using ammonia as a safe and efficient chemical hydrogen carrier, avoiding the difficulties associated with high-pressure hydrogen storage. The main feature of the development is the utilization of engine exhaust gas energy to initiate the endothermic ammonia decomposition reaction on nickel catalysts (Ni/Al2O3). It was experimentally established that despite the presence of water steam (up to 35%), increasing the temperature to 650–700 °C ensures an exponential growth in ammonia conversion, allowing for on-board hydrogen generation. A key component of this stage was a comprehensive study of the thermophysical properties of binary mixtures (ammonia and ammonium nitrate), providing accurate data on density, viscosity, and heat capacity of the working fluid. These results formed the basis of a heat and mass transfer mathematical model required to optimize the recuperator design. The proposed recuperation scheme ensures an increase in the overall efficiency of the power plant through waste heat recovery and guarantees high environmental safety. The results hold significant practical value for creating autonomous hydrogen systems in Ukraine's transport, energy, and agricultural sectors, supporting energy independence and the transition to "green" technologies Product Description popup.authors Ivan M.
