Systematic analysis of the main structures, figures and symbols of geometric ornament, definition of their semantics, granting structural analysis of ornaments the status of a reliable source of knowledge about the formation of human culture, reveal the place and role of Ukrainian ornamentation in this process popup.description2 The subject of the study was the semantics of Trypillian pottery ornaments. A structural method of research was proposed, according to which the semantics of structures, rather than individual signs, should be sought. The eight-member structure of the ornaments was studied: it conceals eight phases of the moon, four of which embody goddesses and four embody gods. The seven-member structure of symbols was studied: it was formed as a result of combining two phases of the eight-member structure. These structures conceal the first (smaller) pantheon (set) of Trypillia deities. In the process of studying the ornaments, a larger pantheon of 32 deities was discovered, formed from four months (in one month there are 8 phases-deities, in four there are 32). Thirty-two anthropomorphic figurines were found in the Trypillian sanctuary in the village of Sabatynivka (Kirovohrad region). The main idea of the ornaments was to demonstrate the deities of the pantheon. The semantics of multiple signs (dots, brackets, dashes) in the ornaments were studied: The goddess was marked with 28 signs (the cycle of the moon and women), two – 56 signs, three – 84 signs, four (the great pantheon) – 112 signs; the pantheon of deities – 32 or 16 signs of goddesses (signs of gods were often ignored). Sets of signs were established – denoting the term of a woman's pregnancy. A new semantic interpretation of a number of motifs (‘owl face’, snake motif) was provided. The semantics of the signs on the heads of female figurines have been revealed. The convergence of the structures of a number of Trypillian ornaments and Podillia towel ornaments has been shown. For the first time in the history of research, it has been possible to penetrate the semantics of a significant number of Trypillian ornaments. Product Description popup.authors Violeta V.
