One of the ways to reduce the consumption of petroleum-based fuels is the use of alternative fuels derived from secondary or renewable resources. In Ukraine and many other countries, the most widely used alternative fuels for vehicles are liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and biodiesel fuel, which can be used without significant modifications to vehicle design. At the same time, determining the optimal adjustment of vehicle engine systems to improve the efficiency of using these fuels remains an important task. It is also necessary to reduce energy consumption during vehicle operation. This can be achieved by varying the internal pressure in tires depending on driving conditions. To reduce road accidents, it is necessary to increase the level of active safety. This can be achieved through the active adjustment of wheel alignment angles depending on driving modes, as well as through more efficient traffic management, in particular by using a polarimetric positioning system. During the first stage of the research project, the properties of alternative fuels were studied and the design parameters of vehicles affecting energy efficiency, environmental performance, and traffic safety were determined. Technical documentation was developed and the engine equipped with an LPG fuel supply system was retrofitted with an ignition timing advance variator. A polarimetric method for determining the relative spatial position of a source of linearly polarized coherent radiation and the system implementing this method were developed.
