It was shown that long-term (90 days) oral administration of GABA (140 mg/kg) normalized the level of glycemia in the blood of rats on an empty stomach, but did not affect glucose tolerance and glycated hemoglobin levels in rats with type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1). Histochemical studies showed that the cross-sectional area of ​​the islets of Langerhans and the content of glycogen granules in them after the administration of GABA on the background of DM1 did not significantly differ from the control group, which indicates the effectiveness of the effect of GABA on the restoration of islets in DM1. The administration of GABA to rats with DM1 led to an increase in the magnitude of endothelium-dependent vascular reactions.
