Kholodny Institute of Botany NASU popup.description2 In the represented report there are the results of the Collaborative Ukrainian experiment (CUE) which has been carried out aboard the space shuttle Columbia (STS-87) 19 November - 5 December 1997 year according to the agreement between NASA and NCAU with participation of ukrainian astronaut Leonid Kadenyuk. A main goal of the work was to study the influence of microgravity on higher plant growth and development atthe different levels of the plant organization - organizm, cellular, and subcellular ones. Two angiosperms species - Brassica rapa and Glycine max, and two moss species - Ceratodon purpureus and Pottia intermedia, were chosen for the experiments. The main objectives of the work were 1/ preparation to the spaceflight experiment, including preliminary ground experiments, working out the corresponding methods of planting in the Plant Growth Facility hardware and in the Container for Biological Research as an analysis of the experimental material; 2/ carrying out the manipulations on orbit acco rding to the protocol of the experiment; 3/ treatment of the experimental and control material after landing, an analysis of results. Methods of light microscopy, transmission and scanning electron microscopy, electron cytochemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology were used with statistical treatment of obtained data. In first, artificial pollination of Brassica rapa plants was carried out in space flight. New data on the effect of microgravity on higher plant generative development, space orientation and morphogenesis of moss protonemata, the structural-functional organization of both a photosynthetic apparatus and a root cap, a content and composition of lipids, amino acids, and phytohormones, gene expression, and infection process of soybean seedlings by a pathogenic fungus Phytophtora soyae were obtained.
