Latent activation of diphtheria epidemic process in children of several regions has been revealed by application of suggested by us indicators of diphtheria surveillance. Great differences in protection to diphtheria in different groups of population has been discovered in comparison with general tendency of improvement of herd immunity against diphtheria and tetanus. It has been shown that the most important factor preventing the spread of infection in diphtheria focus is high level of herd immunity (more than 80 % of people having protective antibody levels >1,0 IU/ml). The study of erythromicin resistance formation in C. diphtheria induced by long-term influence of subinhibitory concentrations of antibiotic has been performed for the first time, no changes in main virulence f actors has been detected under this conditions. It has been elicited the change in age-specific incidence rate pattern of tetanus during the previous 5 years: 85% of all cases has been reported in aged people (60years+) causing high case-fatality rate (90%). Simple schedula of active immunization against tetanus in aged people has been developed. Latex agglutination test as rapid indication of tetanus antibody level in blood of injured people has been approved. The results of the study have been implemented in 3 orders of the Ukrainian Ministry of Health, 1 project of Ministry of Health order, guidline, instuction and 2 letters dealing with the problems of diphtheria and tetanus.
