Target of work: to facilitate the process, to substitute aluminium powder with the less hazardous and cheap reducer and to skip the obtaining of lower titanium chlorides. Methods of research and instrumentation: chemical and spectrum analyses, material balance, laboratory equipment for titanium tetrachloride refining. Tests of technical titanium tetrachloride chemical refining by means of hydrocarbon reducer were carried out under laboratory conditions. The required degree of solid reagent grading was determined, pilot process balance was performed. It was determined that the consumption ratio of the reducer does not exceed 10.8 kg per ton, vanadium content in the refined product makes < or =0.0002% and total carbon content is in the range 0.0005-0.0008%. The researches proved technical availability of titanium tetrachliride refining with hydrocarbon material, good quality of the obtained product, and reasonability of the further improvemen t and industrial development of the pilot refining process.
