Seasonal dynamics of "new" primary production in the western central part of the Black Sea has been investigated. Factors affecting the "new" production are shown. Based on the estimates of annual "new" production in the considered areas, the central part of the sea has been classified to be mesotrophic. Using data on the vertical distribution of particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) from 52 stations of 9 cruises in the central and western deep part of Black Sea for different seasons, their average inventories and fluxes have been calculated. These are the layer (i) above the oxycline, where new particulate organic matter (POM) is produced due to photosynthesis; in oxicline (ii) where the main part of the POM flux (export production) is expired,as it is oxidized by oxygen; and the layer (iii) of the upper anoxic zone above st = 16.5, where active microbiological respiration of organic matter to carbon dioxide, ammonium, and sulfide occurs. The average seasonal inventories and C:N composition of POM depend on the weather conditions in the same and preceding season. The annually averaged C:N ratio of POM insignificantly varies in the water column remaining close to the Redfield ratio of 6.7, while it can significantly vary for individual locations.
