The first goal was to rescue observed-level temperature and salinity data and associated metadata collected from approximately 40,000 hydrographic casts made in the Black Sea. These data were at risk of being lost because they existed as paper records. They were not included in any other data recovery or access effort and were not represented in any existing atlas or published data set. The second goal was to create a new CD-ROM digital atlas, "Physical Oceanography of the Black Sea," based on all available historical hydrological data.
