The grid resolution was approximately 10 km in the horizontal, and 10 m in the vertical. The 3D structures of the long-term data were used for calculating climatic characteristics of temperature, salinity and horizontal and vertical currents in the Barents Sea for summer and winter. More detailed calculations of 3D currents and thermohaline parameters, including the gradient characteristics, were performed in the Polar Front zone. The seasonal variability in temperature and salinity are mainly seen in the surface layer, where the spatial structure of the variability is observed as a northward shift of the Polar Front zone position. In the pycnocline the frontal temperature gradient distribution remains nearly constant during the year. The seasonal variability of temperature and salinity in the near-bottom layer is small, implying that the bottom layers lend themselves to studies of large-scale climatic changes of the Barents Sea hydrology. The characteristic values of the vertical currents in the Barents Sea are typically 1 m/day, with a spatial structure of patchy character. Increased vertical velocities are observed in areas of strong horizontal gradients in temperature and salinity. The 3D spatial distribution of climatic surface temperatures was compared with corresponding data derived from satellite SST data for the period 1984 - 2002. The observed agreement is promising with respect to future use of satellite measurements for observing climate variability in the Barents Sea Product Description popup.authors popup.nrat_date 2020-04-02 Close
