Brown coal and lignites being a methamorphized fuel is easily affected by temperature and chemical substances. That’s why quality sample determination in accordance with the requirements of valid standard method of international standards in some cases can not ensure the required relevance of results. The implementation of the standard will allow to minimize substance dumping from the crucible and take into account the characteristics of brown coal having the low stage of methamorphized. The national standard of Ukraine DSTU "Hard coal – Determination of the swelling properties using a dilatometer" applies the main principles of ISO 8264:1989 "Hard coal – Determination of the swelling properties using a dilatometer" relative to the requirements for the method of determination of the swelling properties using a dilatometer. The cakability of coal is the main characteristic used to estimate its suitableness for the coke - chemical industry. Caking coal is the material to get coke which is used as a stored in the blast-furnace process of metal smelting from ore the implementation of the standard in the method of determination of the swelling properties of hard coal using a dilatometer will allow to determine the most rational choice of coal application. Determination of moisture for the general analysis is required to correct the results of various analytical analyses, e.g. volatile matter and hydrogen content dry results. As hard coal is hydroscopic its moisture content changes along with changes in atmospheric moisture and every time sample portions are used for offer analytical analyses sample moisture for general analyses should be determined. If portions are weighed for several analytical determinations at the same time one general determination of moisture is sufficient to correct these analyses.
