To develop the unique approach for prediction of brittle fracture of load-bearing elements with stress concentrators and different defects. On the whole, investigations are aimed both at increase in reliability of structural components of agricultural machinery equipment and decrease in its materials consumption. Research technique: Finite element methods was employed for calculation of stress and strain fields within the vicinity of stress concentrators. Experimental investigations have presupposed execution of low-temperature tests of uniaxial tensile standard specimens and specimens with stress concentrators. Results achieved: New comprehensive characteristic of fracture toughness that enables to estimate equally ability of high- and medium-strength steels to resist brittle fracture due to different stress concentrators. New technique for reasonable steel selection while designing load-bearing elements of equipment is developed.
