A purpose is to investigate the size dependence of the infrared absorption coefficient of metallic films and wires. The diagonal response on electromagnetic wave is studied for continuous films and wires. The dielectric function of metallic films with taking into account the size dependence of the Fermi level is presented. The procedure of calculation the number of filled subband determining characteristics of ultrathin films is suggested. The transmission coefficient of Au and Ag films in the infrared is calculated and found to be in satisfactory accordance with experiments.
