Scientific works and dissertations of Ukrainian, Italian, American, and Polish researchers have been considered. The definitions of modernization, formulated by representatives of various scientific fields within the framework of modern modernization theory have been analyzed. The essential characteristics of modernization have been singled out. The essence of the concept of "modernization of physical education and sport in the system of higher education" have been determined.
