Визначено, що попередниками криптовалют були ігрові валюти, які представляють собою цифрові засоби оплати специфічних категорій віртуальних товарів та послуг у віртуальних магазинах та відповідних багатокористувацьких онлайн-іграх. На основі проведеного аналізу ігрових грошей та криптовалют визначено спільні і відмінні ознаки цих різновидів віртуальних грошей. У статті надано класифікацію видів віртуальних валют за ознаками типу емітента та характером обігу (конвертованістю у фіатні гроші). The article examines the evolution of virtual currencies from the 1990s to the present, highlights the key stages of the development of virtual money. It was determined that the predecessors of cryptocurrencies were game currencies, which are digital means of payment for specific categories of virtual goods and services in virtual stores and relevant multiplayer online games. Based on the analysis of game money and cryptocurrencies, common and distinctive features of these types of virtual money have been determined.
