Among the homeless, youth are particularly vulnerable and at risk of hunger, illness, and exploitation. Access to safe housing is widely agreed to be the most pressing need. Yet, a significant challenge for the city is an insufficient number of facilities that can provide shelter and medical services for the homeless. Opening a new facility is very expensive, and extending the services offered is also expensive. A handful of studies have successfully developed new algorithms for optimal shelter placements and resource allocation. By using data science, analytics, and optimization, these algorithms can suggest optimal decision lutions regarding the type of homeless shelters to open, location, and services to offer under limited resources. However, the implementation of these algorithms is limited because they are run by code, and typically the end users do not have the background to understand how these algorithms work and how to interpret results. Therefore, the main goal of this work is to create a simple interface to address usability and, ultimately, implementation. With this interface, all that is needed is to select a file with data, press a few buttons and wait for the result. This solution significantly expands the circle of people who can use a complex algorithm to solve problems with placing shelters for homeless youth. The asyto-use interface can help city governments in the USA and beyond access those algorithms and make significant steps to resolve the problem of homelessness in their city.
