Найдавніші англосаксонські закониза структурою і змістом значною мірою базувалися на германській правовій системі: грошова компенсація, опора на ворожнечу та особисту помсту як частину системи покарання тощо. Судова підтримка Церкви на ранній стадії дозволила королівському закону перетворитися на ефективну систему кримінальних проваджень, водночас налагодивши постійне партнерство короля та Церкви в боротьбі зі злочинною поведінкою. Церкву і короля об’єднувала спільна мета – покращення й порядок суспільства. Король був зосереджений на стримуванні та викорінення злочинності в суспільстві загалом, тоді як Церква дивилася більше на спокуту злочину окремої людини. The article is devoted to the consideration of Anglo-Saxon legislation. The earliest Anglo-Saxon laws in structure and content were largely based on the Germanic legal system: monetary compensation, reliance on enmity and personal revenge as part of the punishment system, etc. The early judicial support of the Church enabled the King's law to develop into an effective system of criminal proceedings, while establishing an ongoing partnership between the King and the Church in the fight against criminal behaviour. The church and the king were united by a common goal - the improvement and order of society.
