Higher content of protective proteins was noted in the leaves of drought-resistant varieties. High temperature enhances the inhibition of photosynthesis in drought conditions. It was found that at the beginning of the drought period, the negative impact of high temperature on the intensity of CO2 assimilation was greater than during prolonged moderate drought. After the resumption of the optimal watering regime, the suppressive effect of high temperature in plants exposed to water stress was less than in plants that grew under optimal conditions. The obtained data suggest the high adaptive capacity of the photosynthetic apparatus in winter wheat plants to adverse environmental factors as well as the formation of cross-tolerance of the photosynthetic apparatus to high temperatures under drought. It is shown that drought enhances the activity of antioxidant enzymes of chloroplasts more in drought-resistant varieties, which may serve as one of the mechanisms of adaptation. In field experiments under natural drought conditions, a significant difference was found between winter wheat varieties in terms of the efficiency of using photosynthetically active radiation by crops during the reproductive period of plant development. The highest values of the solar energy use efficiency by crops were found in the varieties Kyivska 17 and Horodnytsia. Close positive correlation solar energy use efficiency with grain yield indicates that this trait is important for improving wheat productivity under drought conditions.
