For more than 100 years, the research and applications focused on the nematic with a nonpolar orientational order. Recently, a new ferroelectric nematic (NF) has been discovered, in which molecular electric dipoles point in the same direction. The current understanding is that this direction is three-dimensionally (3D) uniform. This project aims to explore whether the ground state of the NF could be chiral, with polarization twisting in space, thus reducing the electrostatic energy.
