Subject of research: external (macrosocial) and internal (institutional) indicators and determinants that shape the development of ukrainian higher school as a subject of socio-cultural transformation. Aim of research: determining the main factors and mechanisms of forming social subjectiveness of the system of higher education of Ukraine. Methods of research: survey research among students; individual interviews, including expert-interview among administrative and teaching staff of higher educational institutes of Ukraine; focus-group interviews with students, professors and administrative staff of system of higher education - employees of Central board of education and science of regional state administration; analysis of documents, including concept of higher education development till 2010 year and other state and regional scientific and legal documents that determine the development of higher school in nearest perspective; comparativeanalysis of the level of development of social subjectiveness of ukrainian and belarussian higher schools. The conceptual basis and fragments of the programme of studying the problem of ukrainian higher school development as a subject of socio-cultural transformation are presented; the theoretical analysis of the categories "socio-cultural transformation" and "social subjectiveness" is conducted, the phenomena determined by this terms are analysed; the inferences on the necessity of comparative analysis of the level of social subjectiveness of ukrainian and belarussian higher schools are made. Appendix contains the sociological instruments of the research (the questionnaire for survey among students of higher educational institutes of Ukraine and Belarus). The presented materials can be used in academic process and, especially, in teaching courses "Sociology of education", "Sociology of youth", "Social transformations", and in scientific studying of problems of contemporary higher education.
