It has been estimated that a typical TV program with elements of violence presents on average six violent scenes per hour; in prime time the amount of violence increases on all the cable and on-air broadcasting channels; in general, around 60 % of TV programs demonstrate aggression scenes; a lot of scenes of serious physical violence are "spruced up" and presented casually. Comparative analysis demonstrated that Ukrainian children watch television almost 4 hours (3.7h) every day, which is more than their counterparts in other countries. For example, children in the USA, England and Scotland watch it 1 hour less. In Switzerland this time is only two hours. This implies that the effects of virtual aggression on Ukrainian children are more significant than in the EU or North American countries. The research lets us arrive at the conclusion that legislative bans are not quite as effective as they should be. This is why the best protection from the media's pernicious influence is offered the audience education. The more viewers learn about the negative impact of TV violence and its most harmful kinds, the better they can protect themselves from this threat. We have found out experimentally that aggressive tendencies can be neutralized by explaining to children how films are made, helping them realize the negative influence of television violence and by training their critical skills.
