Paton Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description2 The main objective of this work is to investigate the weldability by an electron beam of some high-tensile aluminum and titanium alloys and to draw up specific recommendations on EBW of civil airplane frame structures on the basis of carried out investigations. At welding of aluminum alloys up to 100 mm thick, the optimal electron-beam welding performance, providing the welded joint strength factor not less than 85...90% of base metal strength, was defined. The influence of frequency and relative pulse duration of an electron beam on welds formation at welding of thick-plate specimens and on hydro-dynamic phenomena in the weld pool was investigated. In order to increase the welded joints quality and to eliminate cracks in the heat-affected zone of some high-tensile aircraft-grade alloys, the welded joint edges were finished by FSW technique (Friction Stir Welding). The welding of edges in a solid phase with stirring changes the structure, emerging at plate rolling, and permits to increase the joint resistance to the cracks emergency in the weld-affected zone.
