It is shown that most production of ROS induced by cytochrome c in outer space is located to the matrix and results from acceleration of Ca2+-cycling and oxygen consumption. Elimination of Ca2+-cycling by Ca2+-chelators at any stage of free-radical reactions and ROS formation abolishes ROS overproduction to control level observed in the absence of Ca2+.
