It is shown that durability (life) of railway wheels by the criterion of shelling formation on the rolling surface defining fatigue crack growth resistance characteristics of wheel steels established for the conditions of combined transverse shear and normal fracture stresses, and also the friction coefficient fc between shear crack faces, which depends on the fracture surface morphology. It is established that operating problems of railway wheels are caused by cracks formation in the wheel/track cyclic contact zone during braking, when the peak temperature in this zone exceeds the austenitizing temperature of the wheel steel.
