Novel bisphenol comprising grafted 1,3-dialkylimidazolim cation: 1-{2-[3,3-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indolyl]ethyl}-3-butyl-1H-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate has been synthesized. Bisphenol A polycarbonate modified with 5 molar percent of the said co-monomer has been obtained. It is found that the internally modified polycarbonate has antimicrobial properties as well as high melt shear sensitivity.
