The purposes of this research are: to study the relationship between the development of certain linguistic competences in a second foreign language and the level of proficiency in corresponding linguistic competences in the first foreign language; to create effective instruments of using available linguistic competences in the first foreign language while learning a second foreign language. Research methods include analytical techniques (psychological, pedagogical and methodological analysis), collection and accumulation of data (observation, questioning, examining students' work), data registration (recording students' mistakes), control and measuring (tests), data processing (table and mathematical processing), verification (teaching experiment). The scientific novelty and theoretical significance of this research consist in detecting the influence of certain students' language competences in the first foreign language (English) on the development of corresponding competences in a second foreign language (French) and in creating didactic instruments of effective using available language competences of students in the first foreign language while learning a second foreign language. Practical results of this research comprise the developed complex of exercises and testing and measurement resources which can be used in the classroom while teaching French as a second foreign language at non-linguistic higher educational institutions.
