The methodology is based on semiological analysis of urban space, theories of collective memory, discourse analysis, national /cultural identity theories. Research material on urban space and memory culture (academic studies, pictures, media-publications, books on local history etc.) from seven selected towns in various parts of Ukraine were collected and analyzed. A study report was prepared, including chapters on the approaches to analysis of symbolic space, memory culture and local identities, on the shaping and transformation of urban spaces in selected seven Ukrainian towns, on the State's memory policy and its implementation. Conclusions for the study and some recommendations on public memory policy in Ukraine were formulated as well.
