The results and their novelty: summarizes the main theoretical approaches and evolution of views to determine the nature of the concepts of "financial intermediation" and "financial intermediary"; systematized classification attributes types of financial intermediaries with regard to their functions and level of development of the financial system; analyzed benchmarks financial intermediaries for economic growth, financial market development and consumer financial services; predicted prospects of financial intermediation in the current conditions of the domestic financial market; identified existing problems of financial intermediation that require priority in solving the global financial crisis. Relationship to other work: results used in the process of teaching, "Research in Financial Services" reported at scientific conferences and published in scientific journals. Recommendations for use of the work: on the basis of the analysis can be offered scientific and methodological approaches evaluation and optimization mechanism for the formation of financial intermediaries.
