The subject of the research is forms and methods that ensure improvement of the quality of fundamental and methodological training of Mykolayiv region school science teachers in Mykolayiv In Service Teacher Training institute. The methods of the resear4ch are theoretical and empirical. The aim of the research on the stage is to determine fundamental (applied) and methodological developmental levels of school science teachers. All basic educational law and regulation documents on astronomy, biology, physics and chemistry teaching as well as professional qualification physics, chemistry and biology teachers' assessment requirements have been analyzed, pedagogical and methodological literature on the issue of research paper writing has been studied, science lessons in Mykolayiv region secondary schools have been observed. Rubrics of assessment of fundamental (applied) and methodological developmental levels of school science teachers according to the levels: low, medium, sufficient and high have been developed. Diagnostic tools have been created. Levels of fundamental (applied) and methodological development of school science teachers have been identified. Physics and biology teachers showed low level of didactics knowledge, while chemistry teachers revealed sufficient level of didactics knowledge; chemistry and biology teachers showed low level and physics teachers revealed sufficient level of applied issue competence; whereas the level of professional practice turned out to be low for physics teachers , medium for biology teachers and sufficient for chemistry teachers.
